Making sourdough doesn’t have to be hard. Having some easy to use tools around your house will help the process of turning fermented flour into a beautiful loaf of sourdough bread more simple. Read below for my favorite tools for making sourdough bread.

When I first began my sourdough journey, I had nothing but a mason jar, flour, and water. And let me tell you, it can definitely be done, and yes it is truly that simple. Overtime I have been gifted sourdough supplies that has made bread making a little easier and has added some beauty to it. Read on to find out about my top 5 sourdough tools that I use almost daily in my kitchen!

Top 5 Sourdough Necessities
- Mason Jars- I have found that this is still my most favorite way to hold my starter. I have found that any jar that is completely tight, doesn’t allow enough oxygen for my starter to grow. I use a mason jar with JUST the lid on top and no screw band. This covers it enough to keep it from drying out, but does not completely seal it. I recommend using a quart sized jar. If you are looking for a bigger option, I have used the half gallon sized jars too and they work well if you are wanting LOTS of starter.
- Danish Whisk– This whisk is a game changer in the kitchen. I use it for more than just my sourdough. I love that it is flat. Because of this shape the dough does not tend to get as stuck when stirring.
- Banneton Basket– I love using my banneton basket for my final proofing of the bread. It is lightweight, and easy to store in my fridge. Mine came with a linen cover (that I have lost..) that made it so easy to simply dust the bread and plop it into the banneton basket for proofing. Since I lost my cover I have started using a tea towel inside and it works just the same!
- Bread Lame– This is the ticket to ALL your beautiful loaves. I did not have a lame for the first 6 months or so that I made sourdough. I was still able to get pretty loaves, but mastering small cuts like leaves or flowers was extremely hard to do with a knife. I HIGHLY recommend getting a bread lame if you are wanting those beautiful loaves that you are seeing.
- Mixing Bowls- A good set of mixing bowls can go a long ways. I was fortunate to have been gifted some ceramic ones for our wedding. I still use them all of the time, and they are so versatile while cooking form scratch. I would also like to eventually try stainless steel ones as well.
I would lying if I sat here and told you that you NEED everything on this list to make sourdough bread. It is truly simple and you can start right where you are with what you have. In a world of consumerism, lets repurpose what we have! If there were two things on this list I would recommend to every person wanting to “up” their sourdough game, I would suggest the bread lame and danish whisk.

I started my advent study and it has been so fruitful to me. My biggest take away is the fact that all the Prophets talked about the coming of Jesus. Then He came and fulfilled those prophecies. Such a test to who God is and his faithfulness to his people. Jesus is such an amazing savior. His gift to us was the most gracious, loving gift we will ever recieve.
